BARRY CORNER By Brian Ingelson Special to THE DESERT SUN
There are those who talk about helping and then there are those who actually do. We are so blessed in this community to have many to whom this applies.
One of the Coachella Valley's luminaries stepped to the fore, again, and with little fanfare changed the lives of a group of students.
You might recall that in September, Barry Manilow kicked off the Manilow Music Project through encouraging individuals to get involved in local schools by donating instruments or music. He collected the needs from all of the middle and high schools in the Coachella Valley and donated $500,000 of instruments, stands and music.
His message was clear: “Anyone can do it, anyone. Just call your local elementary or high school and talk to the music director. See what they need. You can send them a set of drums or used trumpets that are in your basement, and that would make all the difference in the world to young kids. That is the key, helping the kids and making a difference in their lives and their future.”
Providing the instruments was only the beginning.
Members of the Palm Springs High School Jazz Band recently boarded a bus provided by Manilow for an overnight trip to Las Vegas, where the members had an opportunity to meet the singer, get a behind-the-scene glimpse on stage of the workings of a legendary concert performer and become an enthralled audience member. They shared his performance with more than 1,500 of Manilow's adoring fans. Manilow paid all the expenses.
Most of the students had never been to a live concert of the magnitude of the “Ultimate Manilow” show, and most had never stayed in a hotel of the caliber of the Las Vegas Hilton. To see the students interact with Mani low, for them to feel his genuine interest in their pursuit of music and for him to recognize them during his show and talk about his home in the Coachella Valley provided lifetime memories and an amazing sense of pride.
The Manilow Music Project is about ensuring that the music does not stop and that students continue to have the opportunity to learn about the art and language of music, allowing it to become a part of their soul. Manilow met and exceeded these goals with his gifts.
From a very appreciative group of students, faculty, and parents, thank you, Barry, for keeping the music alive.

Arghh. Today I have SOOO much homework from world geog. stupid project due tomorrow. stupid packet also due tomorrow.
In math, we went to collect our TAKS results! once we entered the classroom, our teacher said 'go get your TAKS results now.' and then the guy behind me was like 'we're suppose to collect it during lunch.' and my teacher said 'we're kinda cheating right now so go.' hahas. so i got my results and guess what?!?! I GOT COMMENDED FOR BOTH ENGLISH AND MATH!!! yeah! 16 people out of 19 in my class got commended. can you believe it?! wow... so my teacher is going to wear skirts and bring us to sonic on friday! (:
During lunch, I went to change into my formal wear for teen leadership. We are doing a mock job interview. got 96(: pretty good.

FRIDAY Chase Porter won the election! all because of his screech. hahas.
uncle winston and his family came!(:
finally bought my bag(:
SATURDAY on saturday i went allen with jackie! we left at 11am. talked throughout the whole way with her eating her breakfast for half of the journey. random pic of my sister at first we wanted to eat at Lion City. for me, it was to annoy my friend. but when we got there, it said that they were on vacation, blah blah blah. so in the end, we went to 3-6-9. and guess what? jackie learnt how to use the chopsticks! yay! so we ate and then drove to allen. me and jackie walked the WHOLE thing. never walked around that whole place before. ended up spending about 5 hours there. didnt really buy that much stuff because didnt walk with parents(the ones with the money) bought something for marianne though!(: after that, we went to eat dinner. most embarrassing thing happened. eating something spicy, i needed water BADLY. so i kept pushing the straw through the ice and it ended up going through the cup.....good grief....my parents and jackier were laughing their heads off. not kidding. then, we sent jackie home and went to walgreens because i needed to buy something for project. and then my parents bought a balloon for my sister.
SUNDAY im really tired right now. almost midnight with no coffee taken today. plus 7 hours of sleep. plus staring at my project, not just any project, latin project, for about 2 hours. so talk about today maybe tomorrow?
ohya, dancing with the stars finals. long time ago, actually just last monday, shawn won! i think i blogged about this already. anyways, found the video of the finals. front part kinda funny. maybe. dunnoe...

TUESDAY omg. so on tuesday morning as i was eating breakfast, i knew i saw someone walk to my front door, bend down, got up and walked away. and you know what was the first thing i thought of 'omg. someone put a bomb outside my door. oh great, im going to die on my birthday' yah, i know i know, but my mind doesn't make sense of things early in the morning. then about 1 minute later, gelien called and said 'hey, i think someone put something outside your door.' so i went out and saw my present!!!
WEDNESDAY final of american idol! kris allen won! yeah! personally, i wanted danny to win but oh well... the finale was so good and super funny.
tatiana was so funny!
remember the fight between bikini girl and kara? this is good. yeah.....and then when rod stewart performed, my dad and i were kinda debating who is better rod or barry. hahas
THURSDAY today, we had to stay in second period for 2 hours! for me, it was english. we had to write a poem and present today. here is my poem:
On a sunny June morning With few white clouds in the sky A beautiful baby boy was born And innocence was found in his eyes.
As the little boy grew Like all children would be He welcomed white fleeting snow every December Along with Santa Claus and presents under the tree.
Pretty soon he went to school And during the first month he wished for his mama. Years went on; he was as bright as Einstein At last he got his white-papered diploma.
Ever since he was little He was a musical kid At thirteen his stepfather gave him a white spinet piano Making it into a career he did.
Once he recorded his first hit single That was all it took Following that a number of his album became platinum And everywhere he went people looked.
Thirty years in the music business He is still as successful From blinding white lights flashing from cameras To fans seeing his shows and feeling delightful.
Needing to take little breaks From a day to maybe nine A long vacation on a sandy white beach Or relaxing under the shining stars with a glass of fine wine.
Sadly his time to go came Sadly his journey had to stop Pray that God may give him another life As it was with angels his journey came to a halt.
and then during seventh period, we had to vote for class president and v.president and stuff. chase porter's speech was awesome! hahas. i think maybe everyone voted for him. man, can't describe it.

SATURDAY yay! my dad came back on saturday. at first, he called at like 11+am and i asked him if he was coming back that day and he said can't because of the weather. then i was like oh...ok.... and he said see you on monday. later, my mom called my dad and he said something like he has a headache or he just woke up something like that. so after that i was staring at my english paper for like hours and then at around 3pm, i looked out the window and saw this white car that looked pretty familiar. ME: omg. i think that's daddy's car MOM: what? ME: yah! that's his car. MOM: the weather so bad how to come back ME: yah that's his car. it's white with the yellow thing on top. (mom comes over) ME: see? behind that stupid van. MOM: yah! then we pulled down the blinds, lowered the tv volume and silenced the cellphone. so then, my dad knocked and we didn't answer it. i was about to burst from holding the laughter. i couldn't take it anymore so i went to my room. then he knocked the second time. my mom answered. i went out and me and my mom was laughing away. pretty funny. Thank God my dad came back that time. if later by 30 mins, he would be stuck outside because my mom and me were going to go out. hahas. good times.
SUNDAY after coming back from church, worked on my english paper again. didn't finish it. due monday. then went to get miko from the grooming place. omg. she looked so skinny. forgot what happened later that night.... ohya. jerlyn came over to pass me my present(: thank you!
MONDAY on the bus, was trying to force some secret about my present out of gelien. she stayed strong, not like the last time. i managed to find out from her that it was a memory board(: can't wait for tomorrow!
worked on my english in world geog. english was next period. trying to finish it. in pe, dhineash got detention!!!! hahas. don't know what for but still... in science, my teacher had to remind me the time she called me 'backpack'....in the end, my friend was laughing away for like 15 mins.......i think im going to put 'backpack' on the name section for any science worksheet in the future. good grief.
then came home and went to h-mart. planned to celebrate my birthday on the weekend. didn't want to celebrate it during the week. too tiring.
BARRY CORNER LAS VEGAS "I learned the most about music working in the jingle industry. It was the best music college I could ever imagine."
That's what Barry Manilow said Thursday at the 50th anniversary CLIO Awards in Las Vegas, where the legendary pop composer and entertainer was presented with an Honorary CLIO celebrating his early career as a jingle writer.
Manilow's commercial work for Band-Aid might be his most famous. Indeed, his bouncy tune for the brand became indelibly stuck in the minds of a generation.
"I wrote it in one pass," Manilow revealed in this exclusive video interview as he explains how he honed his mega-hit song-craft by creating brief but unforgettable ad melodies.

REMEMBER PEOPLE, MY BIRTHDAY!!! i think i know what to get my mom for her present. and i know what to ask for mine(: want a hint? what have i been saving money for, for the past few months?
im doing this in the order of the things that i remember. not in order of time it happened.
omg!last thursday, someone threw a brick at my friend's bedroom window! can you believe it? she said it was 2 am. wow. people really have nothing to do. either that or they are drunk. can't be someone thats really mad at her.... creepy
yesterday, my friend and i were talking about memories of elementary school. and we were talking about mother's day. there was this party thing and we brought our moms. and each of us had to do a slide where we describe our mom and the mothers have to guess which child wrote it. and i rememeber my slide was 'my mom loves shopping. she shops at ________,__________and__________. sometimes, i think shops are made for her.' and my teacher was like' who thinks their child wrote this' and half of the moms raised their hands. not my mom though. and my teacher asked who wrote this and i rasied mine. everyone was laughing. it was so funny. good old memories.
